I Just Have To

This song is excellent. Barr Barr are from LA and I still don't know everything about them except they sound like Steven Malkmus with a hint of Suicidal Tendencies "Institutionalized." Consisting of four minutes of heavy talking you laugh at quirks like "It's more vague with no hints as to intention/Wait, except maybe the intention was to seem vague or not to have a cover/Maybe just there is no cover" satisfaisant avec "What about the voice of Geddy Lee?/How did it get so high?/I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy/'I know him, and he does'"

Please, it's my honour.

SXSW

Because be we are both lazy and bastards we are effectively lazy bastards. Unlike all the other blogs we ignored SXSW this year, but I have decided to end this assumed rule between Thom and myself. Here are the NPR Live sessions from SXSW 2007 with KEXP. Beware apparently the NPR can't afford fast hosting.

Okkervill River Live at SXSW

Beirut Live at SXSW

Alexi Murdoch Live at SXSW

MEW live at SXSW

Those are my favourites you can check the rest out here. Others include Andrew Bird, Peter, Bjorn and John, and The Apples in Stereo.

Cheers,
Jon

P.s. I'll be back on the air Thursday considering I successfully lost my election bid.

Sore

Well I was supposed to update yesterday but yesterday is now today because of the time which is although confusing vital to our contributions.

Wintersleep - Sore

Great song for me; "You've been awake all morning" and "Conciously endure every ache and sore"

Jesus Loves Tom Waits

I often think to myself, "Self, who doesn't like Tom Waits?"

Now I can cross The Catholic Church off of that list.

Jesus Loves Tom Waits

TAKE THAT PROTESTANT REFORMATION!

USSR relived

I forgot to update yesterday, my apologies. I was busy but I didn't do any of the things I needed to do. Bad day, I reckon. Today wasn't even that great; it just went by.

To make up for the loss, I've got a little Russian Futurists for you all. They appear on the Stars remix album "Can You Trust Your Friends?" coming out soon and are also uber Canadian. This is sweet pop music that is reminiscent of the man that is named in the tracks' title,Paul Simon. The second track, "Our Pen's Out of Ink" is like the subtle chord progression in a Steely Dan song that you love, just before it switches over to the damned Bbminor7 chord to ruin everything. Don't let the name fool you into thinking it alludes to their style either.

CAN vs USA

So I was thinking among other things, the despite what they say, Canada is pretty equal to USA if not greater. Take a look at this:

Andrew Bird----------------------Final Fantasy
Mountain Goats-----------------Destroyer
Marissa Nadler-----------------Julie Doiron
WSLY Boris Yeltin--------------Tokyo Police Club
Of Montreal-----------------------Hidden Cameras/The Unicorns
Explosions In The Sky---------Do Make Say Think
Ted Leo & Pharmacists------Joel Plaskett

That seems fair to me. Take into account Canada notoriously gave birth to the concept of Supergroup (See Broken Social Scene) as well as Wintersleep, The Organ, Tiga, Stars, and The Arcade Fire and you'll realize we (Canadians) have it pretty much covered. Any ideas for Canadian counterparts to Wilco, Deerhoof or Blonde Redhead? Similarly, what about parallels to Cadence Weapon, Holy Fuck or Andrew Langille?

Final Fantasy - Peach Plum Pear (Joanna Newsom cover)
Deerhoof - +81

Enjoy!

Reference

Hello! The man above, the singer for "Mew" (I recall hearing them once on the radio) is playing my Telecaster! Unimportant!

I'm into remixes--I've got tonnes. Remix albums, B-Side remixes, live remixes and even mashups count. Mostly because if a Canadian artist has remixed it, it counts as CANCON for CJAM. But here are some non-Canadian remixes that suffice.

Biggie - Party and Bullshit (Ratatat rmx)
Klaxons - Gravity's Rainbow (Van She rmx)

Bum Rush the Charts

Bum Rush the Charts is a grassroots effort to stick it to the Man (the Man being the RIAA and Major Labels in this case). In their own words it is:

Podcasting gets little respect from traditional media. To them we're little more than a joke, than amateurs. What they don't understand is that podcasting is more than just a delivery mechanism - it's a social movement. People are growing sick of the watered-down, cookie-cutter content that networks and record companies expect us to enjoy. We want and deserve more. Big corporate media derives its power by having the
resources to mass market their product in a unified effort, which is why they think they're better than us. On March 22, 2007, we're going to give you a chance to change that.

Pretty noble idea, eh?

So on March 22nd go to the Itunes Music store, and Purchase the song "Mine Again" by "Black Lab". The important thing about this song is that the band was drop by not one but two major labels.

See you on the 22nd,

Jon

Waiting

I hate waiting for CD's in the mail...This "Deluxe" Edition of Neon Bible better damn well be worth it...

Arcade Fire - No Cars Go

This off my copy of Us Kids Know, but it will be on Neon Bible...this is to hold you and me over till tomorrow, but I probably won't get the cd for a little while because Canada Post sucks.

God Speed young album, God Speed...

NEW STARS!

Do you trust your friends? I do. So does Amy Millan & co.

There is this sweet new album coming it in a bit, which are a bunch of Stars remixes. Bands like Young Galaxy, The Most Serene Republic, Montag, The Dears are remixing the classics. It's going to awe full! I was all sad that I'd have to wait to hear it, but without further adieu I give you:

Fever Pitch

I recently borrowed a copy of Fever Pitch (new imdb interface sucks) and loved it, but more importantly the movie is resposible for getting The La's "There She Goes" stuck in my head...Damn you Mr. Hornby!

The La's - There She Goes

As well check out Stereogum for some tracks from a unrealesed Frog Eyes side band.
