Does anyone else suffer from random spurting confidence roller coaster rides in the field of mathematics?
Welcome to autumn. Or soon enough, my calendar tells. On the personal notes, I'm getting new glasses, making new music, reading familiar texts and faces. The hallways have become accustomed to my silhouette so much so in fact that they bear little mass in my mind, thus alleviating the boundaries school places on many idle teenagers. I am warmed.
Hot Springs are new Montreal material, but they're solid. The song "Head Rush" faced its name and stacked my mind with the aforementioned thoughts. "Cellophane" carries a 70's rock and roll bass line that is only recognizable to the most ear-tuned; the voice of lead singer Giselle transforms the accustomed into unique in a pseudo-Karen O (sans stress) harmony that surpasses any preconception of direction.

I wanted so badly to post a track from this album when I first heard it a couple months ago,but like so many things in life, I forgot to. Something reminded me of it today though so I guess that is good enough reason to warrant finally posting it.

Spoon, who represent Austin, TX, are touring their new release Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. The single, must I add their great single, "Don't You Evah" is phenomenal. In fact, I've got a cover of it down pat. Great song. Sadly, I don't think it's actually theirs. A fellow Texan quartet split up before the release of their 2nd album and had tracks lying around--Spoon did not wait. Who is this band? I am a man who keeps his word roughly 75% of the time. Why 75% of the time you may ask? Well, any less than 75% and others would perceive me as unreliable, flaky and even potentially a liar. While if I were to keep my word more than 75% of the time, say roughly 80% or god forbid 90% I would be looked upon as reliable and potentially have more responsibility thrust upon myself that would dwindle my precious free-time down to nothing. I'll be posting no more this summer. My affair with you is coming to its inevitable demise, foreseen with my duties being served elsewhere later this week and early the following. I'll be heading up to Toronto briefly to catch a show with my pal Pat, a Windsorite by choice (school) and score with the University dean's. Nonetheless, I've scouted out a wicked show to visit. For all you Torontonians awake and reading, head on over to The Boat this Wednesday night (@ 158 Augusta, just south of College) for a night filled with Prairie Cat and Gravity Wave.
Prairie Cat is where it's at right now for me. I'm in this musical stage where obscurity pisses me off, and anything with a G chord in it makes me want to hit something. But Prairie Cat isn't typical, nor does it matter if the songs involve a G chord, because the heartly-pop-goodness is what makes my Synapse lightning bolts content. The song "Trust Don't Rust" could fit in on Oh, Inverted World with it's bubble-sixties melody well-suited for what I've read to be a former Menomena opening slot. Myspace golden track "Payin' The Rent" would equate well on a new, hypothetical Jim Guthrie release.
I'm stopping no shorter than "I'm very excited to see them live in Toronto" with the exception of my prayers rooting for an all ages venue.

This statement although often reserved for those of us that chose to lead an alternative lifestyle, I will be using for another lifestyle choice. The Hip-Hop lifestyle. I know what your mind must be conjuring up at this point and no doubt the main thoughts are ones of confusion, mainly why would a Middle-Class suburban male who does not have a single ounce of oppression or alienation in him be listening to the very music that came to symbolize the release valve for the youth suffering from these things in the inner-cities of the world. Well my friends it is time for us to leave our respected closets and come out to the world.

I'd like to thank everyone who frequents this blog. I also love it when you comment on the content too, and not on spelling "fly-bys".
Michael brought me to a good point tonight: It seems that people (musicians) who purposefully create music to try and establish an aesthetic for that geographic landmark fail more often than not. Thankfully, bands like Hey Rosetta! who are from the obscure Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador don't try to do that. I say this reluctantly, but it's almost agreeable to the relationship indie label Saddle Creek shares with America both geographically and aesthetically. Artists on the label who are located in central America (Beep Beep, Maria Taylor, Azure Ray to name a few) vary uniquely. Contrastingly, one would say Saddle Creek musicians croon like my deaf Sheltie Wishbone, but think of the other "croon-tune-lovin" beasts anchored geographically. Polyvinyl in Illinois, Deep Elm in North Carolina anyone?!?! Regardless, this spark of musical inquiry (social theory of indie music) is interesting.

Sometimes I feel as if CJAM is actually much much larger than one can conceive of in the on-air studio in the middle of the CJAM building, which sits idle in the basement of the CAW Student Centre at the University of Windsor. Sometimes it's almost as if the stars align perfectly, and there are synchronous values within Canadian independent music sources.
Take for example, todays generous feature on CBC Radio 3's blog: The Mohawk Lodge. The Mohawk Lodge are a band, of course, from the west coast on Vancouver's White Whale Records (alongside Castle Project and others). They've got a brand new CD out that's been playing like mad all over Canada and CJAM alike, but their debut features one of my favourite off-day songs. By off-day, I'm referring to the times when one can tap their feet without worrying of the coming evenings events, or when you just want to match the vocal harmony and the end of Making Music when he croons "Slow down and breathe", and you do so.
Well, it was those off-day qualities that prompted me to bring in a couple Mohawk Lodge tracks the very first day Jon and I did the Breakthrough on CJAM. If I'm not mistaken (which I might be, but still it's equally congratulatory that my memory is still somewhat accurate) The Mohawk Lodge's track "Making Music" was the first song I played. Regardless of if it was, or if Jon requested Cadence beforehand, it was a damn long time ago. Coincidence it must be, that we ran across their debut LP Rare Birds yesterday before our show and decided to spin "Making Music" one more time. But what an even greater coincidence is the fact CBC3 posted their song of the day today as THE MOHAWK LODGE - MAKING MUSIC!@!!
This is the second time CBC3 has copied Thom and Jon in the morning, with the first time escaping me at the moment. Here's a cool band.

The new few days will feature some new and anticipated Canadian indie from a variety of genres. First and foremost are The Weakerthans, who are going to put out their 4th album (in over 10 years of existence) this fall. It's titled Reunion Tour, on-par with the short stump album names they go for (Fallow, Left and Leaving and Reconstruction Site) and an arm lengths behind tracks like Psalms for the Elks Lodge's Last Call and Confessions Of a Futon Revolutionist. This new one is called Night Windows.

If only they toured Detroit. Oh wait, Wednesday, October 24th - Detroit, MI - Magic Stick AA/18+. Although not listed on the Majestic's website, it's on Ticketmaster-which makes it official. This will make up for missing them on December 18th, 2004 in Detroit-the last time they got over here, 3 years ago.
Mad props right away goes out to Jonathon Nehmetallah. While I was sick, alone in my sweaty bed, Jon and compadre Norman (which I have a stuffed duck-fake duck-of the same name) did an excellent job taking over The Breakthrough. My cold held me like a crystal in my bed and then on the couch while hours stacked to nearly 3pm. Jon ultimately never got his phone call, which I apologize for, but it doesn't matter--not because I'm a rude friend--but because I'll make it up by taking him to a ballgame. His eyes better not slip past that last sentence, which appears to be against him if it were not for the second half.
Nevertheless, this is a music blog and not Livejournal. I would officially proclaim this digital flag-in-the-ground a living organism of music journalism, but I'm afraid the definition of journalism in America includes the necessity of getting paid. Thus we are not journalists, but isolated bloggers. Fair enough, I say, thanks again Jon.

As I'm perusing through the selection of Ohbijou videos that Youtube has to offer, I run across a promotional video; the type record labels will often use. It was very interesting to watch because of the unorthodox style of promotion. Need not exercise memory of offshoot antics, need not apply here. The video was more concerned with their current story, practising in their basement as friends--7 of them together--telling stories of moments in time. But at 2:08 into the video, I notice a bright red shirt with capitalized, bolded Times font reading "Bolohan Constr." Mr Bolohan, of Bolohan Construction, was my fathers good friend from University. The company was started both by his brother and himself, in Tilbury. Me being observant? Yes, as always. Me being surprised by the condensed nature of this world? Not at all.
Although not close to being a Phiten titanium necklace, this song sure makes me croon for love.

Oh me, oh my. The White Stripes in Canada. I never would've thought, after being turned on to White Blood Cells when I was still just a young kid, that their grandeur would afford them the most enthusiastic tour I can recall inside the The Great White North. Nevertheless, their secret shows all across Canada (one of which my cousin in London was able to witness, before they played the John Labatt Center) were on par with the ever praised holy grail of Canadian indie, when Montrealers The Arcade Fire completely wowed the audience of a 200-seat Polish church (in which stood a former principal of mine who scored tickets online.)
At the core of all of this is good, honest fun. The White Stripes need not showcase their talent, extravagant ways or wardrobe to us citizens. We understand them. And when the premise for their Saint John show involves playing a single chord/single drum beat, you know they understand it's all just fun too.

The Cinematic Orchestra is a musical project that changes vocalists to suitable artists deemed appropriate. The upside to this is a diverse catalogue of songs, but the overpowering downside would be the completely unconceivable idea of touring. An artist would simply sing one song for 3-4 minutes, and spend the next 23 hours 56/57 minutes waiting. However, Patrick Watson (who was recently added to the shortlist for the Polaris Prize, see post below) has a beautiful voice. This song is grand.

Hey, sorry for the delay. This past week has been my freedom week before another 4 weeks of school comes this way. I also have been keeping busy by riding my bicycle for 5 hours a day.
Black Moth Super Rainbow are from West Pennsylvania, born and raised; on the playground is where they spent most of their days. Chilling out, acid-ing, relaxing all cool and producing some tripped out music outside after school. Until a couple of guys, who were acting all mean, started playing drums into a tape machine. They got in one little fight and their moms got scared, but they grew up and got better making music more fair.

Stars are coming out with their fourth full-length album, the follow up to 2004's stellar "Set Yourself on Fire". The album will be called "In Our Bedroom After The War" and will be out September 25th on Arts and Crafts Records.

My new favourite singer-songwriter. Not much to say about him other than that I have fallen in love with his album, "The Hold Up". The songs are simple and the lyrics aren't terribly complex, which reminds me of Bright Eyes, but I can bear him for more than five minutes at a time. Actually he doesn't remind me of Bright Eyes I just needed a quick comparison. So if you hate Bright Eyes (amen) don't worry I promise you will like this chap.

Fresh from Québec is a new music scene; the growing trend is well produced and composed electronica music (De l'influence de Stereolab, probelement.) The artists are prominently Millimetric, Montag, Tiga and Akida, today's feature.
Nordique music is the label that Kim Gaboury (Akido) runs. The music has a lot less to do with MSTRKRFT but rather the Dan Snaith (Manitoba/Caribou) subtleties. My favourite song from his 2005 album Playtime is the Oriental "China Babies." A live __VIDEO__ for the song can bee seen there, a set opening for Malajube. An mp3 is available on his __WEBSITE__. His brother Martin also has __HIS__ music project.
Immaculate Machine is Brooke Gallupe on guitar, Kathryn Calder on keyboards, and Luke Kozlowski on drums. The band I suppose is most famous for there relation to The New Pornographers through Kathryn. I have become obsessed with the incredibly epic song "C'mon Sealegs" and the cd has even infiltrated into my older Michael Buble lovin' sister's itunes playlist.

Last Wednesday, The National played a packed Magic Stick in Detroit. Along with openers Talkdemonic and Shapes and Sizes, all 3 bands performing have been MP3this! "featurettes".
For whatever reason, the place didn't open up until a good 45 minutes after the advertised time; the guys from The National could be seen 10 feet in front of the door, waiting until a nondescript black Audi came and scooped them all up. Rather than give a show review, Talkdemonic performed well (although more on stage members are encouraged) and Shapes and Sizes might have had an "off night." More importantly, what the fuck was Caila Thompson-Hannant wearing? The National were smooth.

Here comes Yukon Cigar. I doubt they make cigars in the Yukon but I know their gold is nice, and these guys sound like gold. The band assembled in early 2007 to record at a Toronto studio. The songs are more like stories; take "Hello Soul" for example, where centre man Craig Konyu pleads to "sip New Orleans of its soul" through his soup. I hope it's potato soup, because that's what I had last night. The EP, titled Spooning Noises is out now, and maybe upon reading this, CJAM 91.5 fm will get a copy in it's mailbox for us to play!

Montag is Monday in German. If any of you appreciate a good novel (or film) perhaps you will recall the name of the protagonist from Fahrenheit 451 was in deed Montag. But Montag is less familiarly known as Antoine Bédard's electronic musical project.
We may have posted a previous entry about his collaboration with Stars lead singer Amy Millan, producing the dreamy single Perfect Vision, but nonetheless I (and maybe Jon) have been a Montag fan for some time now. He is featured on The Blue House dot org, the new Stars remix album (that is officially out now, and recieved a 1.8 on Pitchfork) as well as a compilation I've spoken about before entitled See You On The Moon (which also features Great Lake Swimmers, Sufjan Stevens, The Fembots, etc).
Well, Montag's got a new single. Best Boy Electric, it is called. Listen to it __here__, and buy it after. Other great tracks off of the new CD (titled Going Places) include Mechanical Kids, Alice, and 322 Water.

Fembots - Small Town Murder Scene
There is a circle of musicians in the Toronto area that have reinvented what the phrase "circle of musicians" means. What I'm talking about are circles that turn into other, partially finished circles. So imagine 3 or 4 circles connected, but then around the edges of those circles you have half circles sticking out.
In this case, it's the combination of Three Gut Records, Paper Bag Records, Die!Venom, The Blue House.org, and Blocks Blocks Blocks. Jim Guthrie (who runs Three Gut, get the joke yet?) has an established solo career, but plays currently with Islands and historically as a member of Royal City. Nathan Lawr was in Royal City, plays drums for the Fembots (Paper Bag Records) and Sea Snakes (Die!Venom)and has an established solo career. Shaw-Han Liem is I Am Robot And Proud, a member of Sea Snakes and the man who made Jim Guthrie's website. He is playing a show in Montreal this August with Nathan Lawr. Owen Pallett (Blocks..) fits into the group because he played strings on Mr. Guthrie's albums. Lawr also played drums for The Constantines. The Blue House is a musical catalogue collective that distributes records and other things, prominently these artists. Grizzly Bear, everyones favourite New York Capella group, put out demos on Audraglint records that were mastered by the owner of Autumn Records, Greg Davis. Greg Davis' solo stuff is found on Car Park, whom caries Montag and Dan Deacon.
Nathan Lawr is busy, but thankfully making a stop here in Windsor tomorrow, May 18th at The Phog Lounge.

Now, from Chi-town (Chicago, where I had the opportunity to go this weekend) comes the band The Changes. I don't know much about them, really at all. They played Lollapalooza unsigned (the only band to do so) and garnered Stephen Malkmus' likening. This next song is sweet.

I should be happily doing homework but I love you all more. Good Shoes is my new favourite band. Notice I spell favourite correctly, as would Good Shoes because they're from the United Kingdom.
The group is straight indie-pop but definitely in the more traditional sense of the term. Read 1980's male sitting in a pub. It may be hard to escape the Futureheads comparison, but they bring an honest reinvention of the style. I'm familiar with the structure, yet it's new to my ears.
Morden, a city in the UK is also the title of their newest single, being released in June on Brille Records.

Jack Valenti, the urbane Washington lobbyist who served as Hollywood's public face for nearly four decades and was best known for creating the film rating system, died this afternoon, according to Warren Cowan, his longtime friend and publicist for the MPAA. He was 85.

The Mark Inside played the CJAM fest this September along with Magneta Lane, some crappy punk ripoff pos, and Bigg's Philosophies. My old teacher once told me of the last groups mysterious existence, and unfortunately school made me miss them live.
